Frequently asked questions

Care instructions

My work is finished with either a microcrystalline jeweler’s wax or a hypoallergenic top coat. These finishes finish will wear off over time and metals may darken, particularly when exposed to moisture like sweat or skin oil. A polishing cloth will usually bring back the original shine.

Sleepless Storyteller metals should not be exposed to chemicals or remain submerged in water. Remove your jewelry before washing dishes, bathing or showering, sleeping, swimming, or playing sports.

A quick note on skin discoloration; this can happen while wearing copper and brass, particularly rings. While I always take the precautions listed above to protect both metal and skin, please be aware that it is possible and outside my control.

Custom and personalized orders

I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with my customers to create a truly unique piece of jewelry. In some cases a custom order requires a non-refundable 50% deposit before work begins.

If your requested design requires the purchase of stones or metals not already in my inventory, the deposit is needed to cover these costs.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Each Sleepless Storyteller order includes a basic cardboard jewelry box, for both protection and presentation.

If your order is a gift and you require a special gift box or wrapping paper, I would be happy to help. But as this is not a standard service I provide, I need a little notice to ensure I can accommodate your request.

Please contact me before purchasing to make arrangements if you prefer any extra packaging.

Wholesale availability

If you own or represent a boutique interested in carrying a selection of Sleepless Storyteller designs, I would be delighted to hear from you.

I have consigned with local BC shops in the past and I am always interested in opportunities to offer my work in a storefront setting.

Ear hygiene commitment

If you've read my return exceptions, I'd like to elaborate on the point about intimate items. The item categories I don't accept returns on (apart from custom pieces) are Earrings and Ear Weights.

Many of my earrings are designed to be worn in or with modified piercings. As a modified person myself, I know the high hygiene standards expected in the body jewelry industry. So to guarantee that the earrings I sell have never been worn, I don't accept returns because I can't resell them.

In addition to this section and the return policy above, I include language about this ear hygiene commitment in every earring and ear weight listing.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any and all questions.

Combined shipping

In the event of multiple orders placed within a 1-2 day window, to the same name and address, items will automatically be combined into one package for efficiency, unless otherwise requested. One less padded mailer means a smaller carbon footprint for your order. :)

If you place more than one order back-to-back with the same name and account, to the same mailing address and require the shipments to remain separate, please contact me and I would be happy to accommodate you.

History of my maker's marks

Most of my jewelry includes a maker's mark. Depending on when the piece was made, you might notice a butterfly gear charm, a stamped butterfly gear, or a stamped one-eyed moth. My new logo also comes in two sizes.

I include maker's marks for a few reasons. First and foremost, I'm proud of my artwork. Secondly, logos and tags are touches I love to see on clothing and accessories I purchase from other artists. Lastly, it's just a branding choice.

My logo changed because my style and techniques evolved and I decided it was time for a new symbol. I also changed my name in 2022. I began selling jewelry in 2008 as Sleepless Storyteller. But when I added fiction to my shop, I felt that I needed a name to represent both art forms.
